YMG’s “We Care, We Can” Canned Food Drive for Children’s Homes

July 17, 2012 by

So often persons feed children at Homes for one day but what happens for the rest of that week or month?

Youth Media Guyana (YMG) hosted the “We Care, We Can” Canned Food Drive with a group of other passionate like-minded young people.  This was the brainchild of Subrina Mohamed-Puran, a Canadian based young Guyanese who wanted a way to give back to children in Guyana, especially those in homes outside the city where help is not as easily accessible.

The event comprised of a talent show in Georgetown and with every ticket sold, the ticket holder was asked to bring a canned/dried/packaged food. Supermarkets and food distributors were also approached to offer support.

The food collected was given to three homes that feed 88 children:
- The Bright Horizon Family (Soesdyke/Linden Highway)
- Haruni Girls Home (Kuru Kuru/Linden Highway) and
- The Drop-in Centre (Georgetown).

All artistes volunteered their talent and any extra money after overheads went towards buying additional canned/packaged food.

This is all part of our outreach activities to allow youth to give back to society positive, tangible ways.
