We are pleased to share the news that the Paraguayan short film “Calle Última” has been selected to attend the Berlin Film Festival (Berlinale), competing for the Crystal Bear award at the “Generation” section.

“Calle Última” is the result of the project named “Right to a life free of violence for children and adolescents on the street, sexual exploitation and other conditions of social exclusion”. UNICEF participated in the film’s production which was funded by the European Union and implemented by the Ludoca group, that brings the NGO Luna Nueva, Don Bosco Roga and Callescuela. UNICEF’s National Goodwill Ambassador in Paraguay, Mrs. Menchi Barriocanal, will be accompanying the director Marcelo Martinessi and the four adolescents who acted in this 20 minutes film.

This project involved a very rewarding and participatory process. Seventeen (17) vulnerable children and adolescents participated in acting workshops and script, where they shared their experiences of sadness, struggles and joys that gave life to the script for “Calle Última”, always with Martinessi’s assistance. Some of the trained adolescents obtained the leading roles in the short film; these are the same ones that are traveling to Berlin to attend the Festival. Gladys González (16 years old), Lorena Esquivel (16), Jorge Rojas (16) and Lorena Vera (15) had the chance to star in fiction the reality of their own lives.

The Berlinale is going to be held from 10 to February 20.
